Some history of the Crawley Real Estate Market

Bordered by famous Kings Park, Crawley is a small suburb along the beautiful Swan River that was merely land once upon a time, first released to Captain Mark Currie in 1829. Currie was granted Swan Location 87 – 32 acres of land on Eliza Bay (later named Matilda Bay after the wife of John Septimus Roe) and Point Currie, which is now known as Pelican Point. The property was later sold to Henry Charles Sutherland in the 1830s who named the area Crawley Park (in honour of his mother, whose maiden name was Crawley), with the bay becoming known as Crawley Bay.

After Sutherland’s death, Sir George Shenton bought Crawley Park and other adjoining properties in 1876 for 1800 pounds. He developed the area until his death in 1809 when the Government purchased the property and granted a portion of the land to the University of Western Australia. His house, Shenton House, still stand in the university grounds today.

Matilda Bay was even a camping ground in the early to mid-1900s and there were tearooms and tennis courts on the foreshore in the 1920s. At one stage, the Crawley Baths were the largest enclosed body of water in the southern hemisphere and for half a century (1914-1964) were Perth’s prime competition and recreational swimming venue. Pelican Point played an important role in World Way II and was the site of the former US Catalina Base, whilst the Crawley Edge Boatshed, thought to have originally been built in the early 1930s, is a well-known landmark to Perth’s residents and tourists. Before the war though, the Swan River at Crawley was utilised as a flying-boat landing location.

Crawley is a great place to call home

Along with a statue called “Eliza” that is located in Matilda Bay on the banks of the Swan River, the Crawley Edge Boatshed is one of the most recognisable and frequently-photographed sites in Crawley. The Royal Perth Yacht Club on Matilda Bay Reserve re-established on the shore of Pelican Point in Crawley after moving from its location in Perth, in 1953.

The University of Western Australia calls Crawley home and sits opposite sprawling riverside family picnic areas off Hackett Drive. The lush JH Abrams Reserve is the suburb’s most southern amenity and meets with Nedlands’ Charles Court Reserve at Broadway. Only a matter of minutes separate Crawley from Kings Park and the heart of the vibrant Perth CBD precinct.

Why you should live in Crawley

Filled with premium apartments and lower-cost student accommodation, it is no secret that beautiful Crawley lends itself to those studying at the University of Western Australia or other nearby educational facilities. Its proximity to the river, Kings Park and the city is particularly appealing.

Breathtaking water views grace almost every inch of Matilda Bay Reserve, making leisurely morning or evening strolls quite worthwhile. There are even places to eat or have a drink right on river’s edge. The suburb’s tranquillity, despite its proximity to the university, should not be underestimated.
